Mould making and slip casting are semi-industrial processes employed by studio potters to aid in the reproduction of multiples. They involve creating a mould of an object in plaster of paris, from which a cast in clay can be taken. Each mould can be re-used hundreds of times. This technique lends itself to an endless variety of applications from the production of domestic ware such as cups, bowls or vases to bas-relief tiles and sculptural objects.

This one-off series of mould making workshops is available for the first time at the Glasgow Ceramics Studio and taught by Kevin Morris, a recent ceramics graduate from the Glasgow School of Art and GCS Graduate Award winner, who trained with master mould makers Bill Brown and Sandor Dobany.

Course and workshop dates:

  • Press Moulds:  Saturday 21st and/or 28th January 2012
  • Slip Casting:  Saturday 4th and/or 11th February 2012

Times: 12noon - 4pm
Teacher: Kevin Andrew Morris: BA (HONS) Ceramic Design
Cost: £50 single session,  £75 double session, £150 four sessions

Students will learn a number of mould making and casting processes from fundamental principles to the more advanced techniques. Even though the current series of mouldmaking and slipcasting workshops has already started, it is still possible to join the workshops.

Press Moulding:

In the first session, students will produce a one piece press mould from a starting point of either a clay original or brought in object. In the following session, students will have the opportunity to take castings from moulds made in previous session. Or for those interested in press moulding as a single session, take castings from moulds provided.

Slip Casting:

A follow up course will allow students to learn the principles to produce a multi piece mould for slip casting, and take castings from it. Again, the slip-casting session is offered as a single session or as a follow up to the previous mould making session.

This course is suitable for the complete novice or the more experienced who wish to hone or add to their existing skills.

The price of each session includes tuition, materials, glazes, firings tea, coffee and biscuits. All tools and equipment will be provided.

To reserve your place in the workshop, contact Kevin Morris at the studio on 0141 550 8030 or by email on kevinandrew (dot) morris (at) gmail (dot) com.

Family groups with children and community groups are always welcome. A taster session can be a great treat to celebrate someone's birthday or even an upcoming wedding!

And of course, if it's just something you would like to try as a treat for yourself, one to one taster sessions are also available.

The price of each session includes all materials, glazes and firings and all tools and equipment are provided. You can make as much work as you like during the workshop, and after glazing and firing it will be yours to take home with you.

Also a great way to expand your skills if you have already done some throwing and would like a private lesson to learn some new techniques or create more challenging work.

Private classes with one to one tuition and custom tuition for groups can be booked at any time to suit your schedule. These can be taken as a one-off or as a series of classes to guide you through the entire process of making, turning, decorating, firing and glazing ceramic work.

Cost: The base cost for private classes and taster sessions is £25 per hour. The total cost depends on the number of people attending and the duration of the class. For example, a two hour taster session costs £50 in total for one person and £60 in total for two people. The cost for any additional people is £15 for the two hours (£7.50 per hour). All the work you make during a class is ready to pick up about two weeks after your class and the glazes used are food safe.

There are discounts available for children, students, large groups and anyone wishing to take multiple private classes.

For more details about taster sessions and private classes go to our "Throwing for Beginners" page, by following the link in the left hand menu from "Classes and Team Building".
